Thames Nautical Training College H.M.S.Worcester,
the Cutty Sark and the yawl Katrine. 1951/2.
Oil on board (800 x 600)mm
The Worcester was moored off Greenhithe on the Thames, surrounded by cement factories and other industries. This was where I completed my pre-sea training duting 1951 and 1952. It was a hard school with a routine that had not changed much since the 1860's, but it was effective and, in the main, fair, with a great deal of responsibility devolving on the more senior cadets. I have warm memories of my time there. The old yawl, Katrine, belonged to the college. She had been built sometime during the 1890's and was not in very good repair, but we enjoyed sailing her, even though the pump was manned more or less continuously in any wind.
